A whopping 1546 people have turned Queens Park purple today, coming together dressed as Toowoomba Violets for Floral Friday and a world record attempt, marking the spectacular opening of the 2026 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.
The sea of purple brought together school children, families, locals, visitors, community groups and Toowoomba Regional Council representatives, all celebrating the fl ower that has been part of the city’s identity for almost a century.
The previous record stood at 938 people dressed as sunflowers in Malta.
Today, Toowoomba surpassed that number while paying tribute to its official floral emblem.
Toowoomba Regional Council Tourism portfolio spokesperson Cr James O’Shea said the achievement was a proud moment for the city.
“Today is a fantastic moment for Toowoomba. To see more than 1500 people come together, dressed as our very own Toowoomba Violet, is something the whole community can be incredibly proud of,” Cr O’Shea said.
“The Toowoomba Violet has such a special place in our city’s history, so it’s fitting that we’ve celebrated it by bringing our community together and making a little history of our own.
“To start the 2026 Carnival by breaking a world record is a pretty spectacular way to celebrate what makes Toowoomba special – our gardens, our people and our community spirit.”
Health Teacher and Sustainability Programs Coordinator at Toowoomba East State School, Amy McGaw, said it was inspiring to see local children and families involved.
“It’s wonderful to see so many children and families dressed as our Toowoomba Violet and celebrating something that is so special to our city,” Ms McGaw said.
“For our students, this is about so much more than trying to break a record. It’s about being part of their community, learning about our history and creating a memory they’ll carry with them.”
The Toowoomba Violet has a special place in the city’s history. The Sweet Violet, Viola odorata, became known as the Toowoomba Violet after local mothers and families sold bunches of the flowers following World War I to help raise funds for the Mothers’ Memorial, honouring their fallen sons. It was formally declared Toowoomba’s floral emblem in 1932.
The world record feat marks the start of the 2026 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, which runs from 18 September to 5 October. The Carnival features more than 80 events and experiences across the Garden City, including the Grand Central Floral Parade on Saturday 19 September, FEASTival on 26–27 September and Paw Parade on Sunday 4 October.
