Toowoomba and surrounds is set to turn the entire region into a sea of colour as Floral Friday returns on Friday 18 September 2026, inviting the community, businesses, schools and visitors to dress head-to-toe in florals ahead of the official opening weekend of the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.
Known as one of the most joyful and visually spectacular days on the Carnival calendar, Floral Friday is a region-wide call to action, with workplaces, shopfronts, classrooms and streets encouraged to “go floral” and kick off Carnival season in full bloom.
From floral shirts, dresses and hats to creative handmade costumes, the message is simple: if it blooms, wear it.
Toowoomba Region Council Tourism portfolio spokesperson Councillor James O’Shea said Floral Friday had become a powerful expression of community pride and Carnival spirit.
“Floral Friday is one of those moments where the whole region leans in together. It’s creative, it’s colourful and it sets the tone for everything that follows across the first weekend of Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers.”
“We’re encouraging everyone to get involved, whether that’s in the CBD, regional hubs, at school, at work or at home, the more flowers, the better,” he said.
In 2026, organisers are also delivering a bold community moment, with discussions underway for a world record attempt for the largest gathering of people dressed as flowers in one location.
While final details are still being confirmed, the initiative is expected to bring together schools, community groups and media partners in a shared celebration of colour and creativity.
Cr O’Shea said the idea reflects the spirit of the event. “Floral Friday is all about imagination and community participation, so the idea of coming together for something as fun as a record attempt really captures what this day is about.”
Lisa Bentley, owner of Jilly’s Cafe, and proud Floral Friday advocate from 2025 said they were delighted to support an event that brings the city together in such a vibrant and inclusive way.
“Floral Friday is pure joy. It’s creative, it’s community-driven and it showcases Toowoomba at its absolute best.”
“We’re proud to support an event that encourages people of all ages to get involved. Our staff love welcoming people into Jilly’s to enjoy our Carnival #trEAT offering each year and Floral Friday is another way for us to have fun and celebrate the start of Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers in such a unique way,” she said.
The initiative is also expected to include creative community activations across local media and schools, including printed fl oral cut-outs and DIY costume elements designed to encourage participation from children and families.
Floral Friday will take place on Friday 18 September 2026, marking the official floral takeover to kick off Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, which runs from 18 September to 5 October 2026.
Residents, schools, businesses and visitors are encouraged to start planning their floral looks now and share their creations across social media using Carnival channels.
