Spanning an impressive 30 acres, Newtown Park is a popular spot that’s coming up roses! The park boasts a children’s playground, barbecue area, and sports ovals with croquet lawns and cricket pitches – something for everyone to enjoy!

Situated within the park, you’ll find the award-winning Queensland State Rose Garden. More than 2,000 roses and over 250 cultivars are planted in various displays and collections, making it a must-visit destination for rose enthusiasts.

The garden features floribunda, hybrid tea, David Austin, and climbing varieties. Of special interest are the Reithmuller Rose varieties, including Titian and Carabella roses, which were bred by Toowoomba-born David Reithmuller. Other collections include the Heritage Roses in Australia Collection and the Alister Clark Rose Collection, as well as other heritage and commemorative roses.

Note that the roses bloom from October to April (peak blooming is October to November). So, while the rose garden may not be in full bloom during Carnival, it’s worth coming back for – every rose has its day!
