Carnival Queens Exhibition

Carnival Queens Exhibition

Wednesday 11 September to Sunday 6 October – 10:30am to 3:30pm

September 13 @ 10:30 am September 29 @ 3:30 pm

In celebration of Toowoomba Carnival of Flower’s 75th anniversary, this exhibition will bring together works by local artists that respond to the theme ‘Carnival Queens’, blending contemporary art with the rich history of Carnival.

Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery has a special connection with 1950 Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers Queen, Miss Fay Ryan. During her coronation, Miss Ryan sat upon a ‘gilded armchair in the manner of the Italian Renaissance c 1850’, which had been newly gifted to the City of Toowoomba by Fred Gould in honour of his late wife Lucy.

The ‘throne’ now resides at Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery and will be viewable for a limited time during the exhibition. Carnival Queens is on display from 17 August – 20 October 2024.
