Fri 16 – Sun 25 Sep 2016

Laurel Bank ParkJust to the west of the city centre on Herries Street are the magnificent grounds of Laurel Bank Park. Kids love the giant “caterpillar” and “train” shapes which have been topiary clipped into the hedges. Keep a nose out for the garden the Downs Association for the Blind helped create. It’s bursting with strongly scented blooms you can enjoy with your eyes closed! Laurel Bank Park’s stately grounds also feature a croquet lawn, graceful archways, an elevated viewing platform and a great childrens’ play area.

PICNIC POINT

Fri 16 – Sun 25 Sep 2016

Picnic Point LookoutPerched atop the crest of the Great Dividing Range is the heritage listed Picnic Point. The panoramic 180 degree views will take your breath away stretching out over the valley to surrounding mountains, the deep gorges below and the world heritage listed area of The Scenic Rim. On a clear day you can see all the way to Brisbane. Picnic Point is 160 precious acres of priceless landscape.

When you enter the park you’re greeted with an avenue of mature hoop pine and South Queensland kauri before the parklands open into gorgeous manicured lawns. Why not pre-pack a picnic or stop by the café and restaurant before nestling on a section of quiet grasslands under a bunya tree.

A stroll along the beautiful Pardalote Walk is a great way to take in spectacular views of the Lockyer Valley. The Pardalote Walk follows the very edge of the escarpment. The full length of the walk is about 1.9km with access at a number of points along the escarpment. Allow around 45 minutes to enjoy the walk.

Picnic Point is one of those special places that will stay in your memory. You’ll be glad you took the time to soak up the incredible views and breathe the fresh, crisp air.

HARROW HOMESTEAD AND GARDEN

Sat 17 – Sun 25 Sep 2016

Harrow Homestead GardensOpen weekends only – Sat 17 – Sun 18 and Sat 24 – Sun 25 Sept

Take an unforgettable journey to yesteryear at beautiful Harrow, a private home and a grand residence. This charming homestead was once the centre of the small village with a collection of outbuildings, workers cottages and a school. Harrow is still very much a working property today.

The rambling picturesque gardens cover 10 acres featuring a 50 metre rose arbour, waterlily-filled lake, extensive garden beds, fascinating trees and shrubs and a fish pond. Robert Ramsay, the English owner, had the impressive home constructed in the 1870s mainly of hoop pine and red cedar with large rooms and an arched hallway of polished pine and cedar panelling. The home covers 100 square metres with wide verandahs on three sides. You can imagine the original residents sitting on the verandah enjoying a cup of tea (or something stronger) on a warm afternoon as they enjoy a fresh, cooling breeze.
